I had the 06 starter installed, (nose cone) it bolted up flat no issues, also the the trans is still original to the truck which is what the starter actually mounts to.

Well this morning I installed the other starter, used some jumper cables and a jumper wire to fire it. Started up and no issues, no grinding or anything. I bench tested the other starter on the ground, it was throwing the gear out but no rotation, I think I'll replace with correct starter for the pickup. Funny thing the 04 starter even used different bolt, didnt check if standard or metric but bigger threads with different pitch, and a different head

Well installed a new 06 starter we're out on our own power and feet again, stuck on some 4th gen wheels I picked up. Seems I have a brake dragging which I suspected, everything seemed ok when I switched out the wheels but driving it now I can really feel it. Also need to figure out why the brake pedal doesn't return to the brake light switch, even pulling it manually with all my force it doesn't reach. Switch looks new, maybe the PO snapped it before installing and its all messed up, but we'll see.

Runs smooth, no leaks, no warning lights. Drives great outside the brake drag,

Yeah, if I recall correctly, the brake light switches on those are install, release, and that's it. If you screw it up, time for a new switch......

Would also be another source of the battery draining as the brake lights are on all teh time and may not easily be noticed unless you're indoors. I wish they were a little cheaper, but I guess I'll figured out what brake is dragging and pick one up with the new brake lines, maybe I should just do both fronts, looks like PO replaced calipers already, I always make a point to do the rubber lines anymore with calipers, this happens more then not on these older trucks.

Well got the unit up on all 4 jack stands again, had the wife hold the brakes and release, the front brakes definitely take a good 4-5 seconds minimum to even begin to release and even then there's a good drag on the wheels for another second or two after that. Rear brakes are pretty much instant release in comparison

I think I'll replace the rubber lines regardless but is there anything else that could potentially be the issue being its both side the same way, usually I just get one brake dragging.

Master Cylinder? Possibly in connection with the brake pedal not returning?

Wonder if the 04 master cylinder is the same, physically it looks the same.

Looks like if the 04 has 4 wheel abs its the same master cylinder, if it doesn't theres a different part number.

I'll probably change the booster and all since I have it but whats the trick to separate the master from the booster, I tried to leave the master in chassis so I didnt open the brakes up but I could not get the booster to split from the master in any way. Id worry I did something there that messed the pedal up but I didnt move a MM for me so I doubt it. Also the brake drag was present before I bought the truck so nothing I did recently caused that

Drums have springs to retract the shoes when you take your foot off the brake. Disc brakes do not. Now, the rears operate at a lower pressure than the front, and that *might* be a contributor to the rears releasing first..... Maybe.... How does the fluid look? Flushed the system in recent memory??
