2005 Ram Front End Rattle/Clunking (AT LAST FIXED TODAY)
dang! thats crazy. sorry too! from personal experience, a clunk or a squeak is one of the hardest things to diagnose. Mostly because it doesnt do it all the time. Only driving, which is kindof hard to get a tech under the car while driving and pin point what is making noise. but this, i dunno. sounds like you have got everything replaced!!!! Not to sure what to tell you from here. haha have the techs checked everything as in engine? all your engine mounts, your front differential(if 4x4), bearings, seals? I'm pretty sure with all the stuff their doing they know its not the bearings. haha thats b.s. bout the car thing. they shouldnt be charging you.
cableguy 1224, have they checked the sway bar end links like other members mentioned? Sounds like you and I have the same problem. Worse time I hear the clunk is when driving down my back gravel alley. I bought a grease needle today and am going to try poking a hole in the sway bar end links and pumping them full of grease to see it it helps. If it does, then obviously that's the problem One post on this thread is from a mechanic that has replaced lots of them front what he says and problem solved. We checked mine out and sure they "appear" to be OK but I'm starting to think maybe that's the problem on my truck. Has your dealer done anything with your truck regarding these end links? I'm really curious to know. If I find the grease helps I'll let you know. I'm starting to think engine mounts maybe?????? I am grasping for any answer. Keep us all posted if they fix yours.
Although dangerous, I am going to see if I can convince my friend who is a diesel mechanic for our bus company where I live to stand on my front bumper with the hood open as I drive up and down my back alley slowly to see if he can see or hear anything.

Snowmobile and LSMAN,
Yeah they told me they have checked EVERY bolt and fitting on my truck. I will ask again about the links though, but I just did the ask the other day when I was talking to the tech working on it about the bushings. My Father also mentioned the motor mounts. the dealer said that was one of the 1st things they checked months ago.
I was up snowmobiling last week where there was allot of snow packed roads I was driving on, I wish I would have had my video cam running in the cab, you would have been able to hear it on the video. My 3 Buddy's I had with me are all Chevy guys and they were making fun of the Ram because it sounded like the front end was going to fall off.LOL
Roads like gravel or snow pack it when the sound comes alive to say the least.
Please let me know what the grease in the ends do.
I will let you also know this next week, I told them I don't want it back until its fixed this time. Might not ever get it back huh?? Ha ha

I'm not sure what these guys are doing at the dealer were you are. But i would remove the sway bar completly and drive it you will probally find the noise it gone. I think that it is the outer sway bar links!!!!!!!!

Personally I wouldnt run the large tires youre running on this half ton, but thats just me. I would change the sway bar end links themselves. Moog makes aftermarket ones for 50 bucks each with lifetime warranty. Ive owned 2002-2004 Rams both half and three quarter ton trucks and this is a common problem. Not so much the bushings but the end link joint itself pops. Get under the truck and bench press it up and down, get her bouncing or have someone get it bouncing and use your hand and feel around, you'll figure it. Later'

The Larger tires have nothing to do with this issue though, This problem started at 8000 miles and nothing had been done to the vehicle yet, I have also spent a few hours under the truck getting my little work out in for the day
Thank you for the tips though, I hope this week while its at the dealer ship they will fix it. Its still under warranty until October 20th.
When you talk to the Dealer ask them if the hub bearing might be making the noise. A friend of mine has a 2006 1500 2x4 ram last week he took his truck in for front end knock and vibration and the dealer replaced two hub bearings in the front. He tells me that the noise is gone and his truck is very smooth. Now I am trying to get them to replace my hub bearing for my knock and I see this is going to be a fight with them because they told me all ready that they are done with my truck.
UPDATE AS OF 2-26-08
The dealer called me to day to let me know they are going to try replacing the entire Rack and Pinion system and also the steering column. They should have it done by Friday he said. If this doesn't fix it he said I am looking at two last options. Either Deal with the clunk or we can talk about a buy back option being its still under warranty. (LEMON LAW)
Have any of you ever had to have a vehicle in the past bought back because of a lemon law? If so how does that really work? Will they pay me what I paid for it 3 years ago being it was brand new???
