Default DIY Rear diff fluid change?

Hi -

Just turned 30K, so it's due. Called a trusted lube shop, they want $139. Called the dealer, they want $145. So I thought f*** that, I'll buy $30-$40 of synthetic gear fluid and do it myself. Crawled under the bed, didn't see a fill hole or drain hole on the diff (My H3 has both, an old Toyota AE86 I once owned at least had a fill hole). Searched the forum, couldn't find any DIY guide, but it does look like lots of folks here have drained and filled their rear diff....

So, how is it done on an '07 Ram Hemi 2wd? Please help... Thanks!

you could suck it out of the diff plug that is in the cover, but the right way is to take the rear cover off and wipe it all clean. Scrape the rtv sealant off and put new rtv sealant back on. No paper gasket is needed. Tighten cover down. fill back up. i like to wait till the rtv sealant is set-up before I pour fluid in. Wait like an hour or so. You'll need 2 qts of 75w-140 Full synthetic. if you buy Mobil 1 you won't need friction modifier, but if you buy other cheaper Synthetics, you'll need the modifier for the lsd.

I read the capacity is 2.45 qts. so wouldn't he need another quart? I'm getting ready to do this myself and have read some conflicting info. Amsoil's site says to fill the differential no higher than a 1/4" below the fill hole, but the service manual says to fill up to the bottom of the fill hole, which is it?

To be safe, buy yourself 3 qts. You won't use all of it, but you'll have some extra for next time... Pretty simple process. I can send you my how to if you like (I installed my Powertrax at the same time). I'd attach it, but I am at my file size limit.

Technically it's 2.25qts 2qts of fluid and 4ounces of friction modifier. Saving the $20 and running 4oz less won't hurt at all. Fill is 1/2" below hole. Chrysler changed it in the later years.

That's interesting, I have a service manual for my 04 (it says 2.45 qts) and a haynes manual for 02-05 (it says 2.45 qts for all the 1500's). Amsoil's site has the same numbers from 02-05 but then they change from 06 up.

My 08 factory fill is about 1/8" below the plug.

When I changed my diff fluid I replaced with Royal Purple and it had the modifier in it.
