I changed the oil in a gearbox on a Blanchard machine from the 50's and I think it was the original oil,it was like death when i craked the drain open on that thing!!

Heh heh, thats not what he said, and I thought he changed the diff too. I was about to jump in a scream about gear lash, pinion pre-load, and gear tooth contacts, but all is good now.

I like the blackened bolt look against the red pan . For me it's an easy look.

Well, the red cover matches the shock boots I guess.

but a black cover wont stick out at all...it'll just look "clean"...

John you should do the calipers the same color now too...that way a few things will match up and flow together...even though you'll really only see calipers while driving at higher speeds.

Default Ring Gear 3.92

Hello,

You mention C clips, that means you have a 3.92 diff. Here is what happened to my new 2010 Ram at 2000 miles with the 3.92 differential.

How hard is it to replace the ring gear?

My 3.92 locking differential started making whining noises between 45 and 55 mph. Dealer installed gear kit-ring and pinion, bearings and seals. Mechanic found zero gear backlash and found pinion had no bearing preload.

Sounds like it was made on a Monday or Friday. I am loosing faith in American workmanship but I love my beautiful 1500 SLT Crew Cab, 5.7 Hemi Bighorn with the Ramboxes.

I hope the local machanic did a better job than the one with the Unioin Label.

P.S I found some pretty scarry posts on other websites about the 3.92 diff falling apart and drive shafts falling off.

P.S.2 The work order stated "Replace rear pinion and bearings and refill fluids and road test" This means they did not put in the ring gear which was part of the kit.

The machanic's notes said "Replaced ring gear and pinion etc." which is a lot more work than just replacing the pinion"

First of all C-clips are what hold the axles in place. The clutchpack reainer clips are what hold the clutch packs in place. 2 diff clips. I know most people call the ratiner clips "c-clips" but that's incorrect.
The retainer clips or as u say c-clips have nothing to do with 3:92 which is the gear ratio. it has to do whether or not you have a limited slip differential or an opne one(one-wheel peel).

In order to change the pinion gear which is the small gear all the way in the back, you must remove the ring gear which is the larger gear on the left. The only harder part to change the ring gear would be to remove the 10? bolts that hold it onto the LSD carrier. I'd be very surprised if the mechanic didn't change the ring gear along with the pinion gear as they are a matched machined set, although that would be very dealer like while being under warranty.
