Default Heads are back

Hey everyone sorry for not posting in the last week had nothing to report. Got heads back. Complete valve job with #2 exhaust valve replaced. Cost came out to $1,100. So yesterday I pulled oil pan. “Never again” will I do this took almost an hour to get it off damn near 20 years of never coming off. Anyway pulled #2 position went to remove rings and the second ring snapped. So ordered a ring set then proceeded to home cylinder wall. Presses out old ring pin and seated new ring pin and piston to rod. Replaced oil pump. Here’s a few pics.

Better than new

Cleaned and honed

Been following along for a bit. Thanks for thoroughly documenting everything you've doing and bringing your 4.7 back to life. I had the oil gauge/pressure switch anomaly a few years ago at around 85k. Went through 3 switches, seafoamed oil, then pulled pan, replaced pick-up tube, new gasket, and reused splash guard. Ran great last few years on my truck. Presume it was caused by sitting and cheap oil from first owner. Sorry that you are having issues, but I will definitely follow your template, prescription fix IMHO. Also help in any way via similar experience. Appreciate it and best of luck with everything. Cheers to you and your son.

If you still have the heads off, take the old ring (that is still in one piece) put it in the hole and measure the end gap - will give you an idea of how worn it is.

That old piston looks pretty nasty from the valve contact, good thing you're replacing it.

What did rod bearing/crank look like?

Did you pull the block out, or is it still in the bay? Also, is that a notch I see cut into the edge of the new piston?

The notch in the piston gets installed facing the front of the motor. The wrist pin bore is not precisely centered in the piston.

Still in the bay, That is my only regret. I should have pulled and and did all 8. But if I get another 100,000 out of this fix I'll be happy

Default Cylinder Gap

Someone mentioned putting the old ring and checking the gap. Forgot to measure but I am guessing around .040-.050
