plumcrazy: it is not a pretty thing getting that 4" into the dash. I did not go with the 3.5 because I plan on amping them one day and the RMS max for the alpine was only 15. I only got one in today, yes it was that rough, plus it rained all day and had to do other things, but man it was a challenge. Passenger side should be easier.
However, the sound check, and compare to the stock is amazing. Anyone just thinking about changing out speakers should go for it. But maybe stick with 3.5 for the dash, that would be an easy switch out.

Alright, I put in all 4 door speakers, that was easy, you just have to be careful of a couple of things. (1) make sure you pull off the plastic around the door handle. (2) make sure wires are in front of plastic guard so it does not interfere with windows. I put in Alpine SPR-69C 6X9's in all four doors. Crutchfield said it would not fit in front doors, but it fits perfectly in all four. (on a side note, I ordered the crutchfield speaker adapters, even though I got my speakers somewhere else, they fit on the door speakers, but not on the dash, unless there is a special one for that. just one more thing to make the dash a pain.
All I have left is to put in the passenger dash speaker. As big of a pain they are, I will say the most noticeable improvement is in the dash speakers. And wait for my speaker box to go under my passenger back seat for my sub.
here is my set up:
RES factory HU
Alipne SPS 400 4" (Dash)
Alpine SPR-69C 6X9's (All four doors)
PAC AOEM-CHR3 for amp
MTX 752 Blue Thunder amp
MTX Thunder 4000 12" in a 1.15" sealed box
almost done
plumcrazy, what is your set up?

Factory Head Unit not sure which one it is, just your normal SLT headunit, not mygig, no dvd, no nav. Just AM/FM CD and Sirrus.
Got a JL Audio Cleansweep
Lanzar Optidrive Opti SL50.6 Car Amplifier,
Amplifier Type Multi Channels
Channels 6-Channel
Bridgable Bridgable
RMS Power at 2 Ohms 90 W x 6
RMS Power at 4 Ohms 50 W x 6
240 rms into 2 ohms (channels 5 and 6 bridged)
So I will be running it like this
50x2
90x2
240x1
(all RMS @12v)
(bought a Soundstream Ref. 405 was going to use it till I realized it would not do a 2 ohm stereo load, read the specs for the 405s not the 405 orginally, did not realize the mistake till I already bought it, so now when I get back I will have to sell it)
A JL Audio 12W6 (I think it is a W6, been a while since I have had it out of it's box, had it a while also) in Iraq at the moment can't just go check it lol. (this will be in a Fox Box Sealed)
Don't have speakers yet, still trying to figure out what fits, I was going to go with Polk DB 6x9 but not sure if they will fit, because of tweeter protrusion. Did it look like there would be a problem wth a speaker where the tweeter stuck up a bit?
May go the Alpine route myself, what do you think of them? Pics of the dash speakers would be great. I am in the same boat as you, my amp is 50 watts RMS for the dash speakers. Course if I go Polk then they can handle the 50 watts, but would still like to upgrade to 4" speakers to play it safe.
I am going simple with this system I am leaving my other equipment for the Scamp.

Plumcrazy, I have had a few different brands of speakers before and just seem to always get alpine, I like them. As far as other brands fitting, compare the specs on crutchfield to your choice, I think the big concern is depth. I believe the Alpine are under 3 inches. Go with the brand you like.
I really price shop online and order from different places, so I have a pile of stuff until it all gets here, then go at it. I am reusing my amp and sub from a previous stereo because I like them.
Will be putting in the other dash speaker today, all things permitting.

Hey plumcrazy, I’m pretty sure they will fit in the fronts. I almost bought these myself, but went with Infinity 6 x 9's. They fit with a protruding tweeter, and they are also spaced further out because I had to use a spacer ring and longer screws to clear the magnet, but everything fits with room to spare.
I think the polk db's would be an excellent choice. I strongly considered these myself, but I'm very happy with the Infinities. They hit harder and lower than the factory alpine drivers, and they have much more detail. I can hear Bass guitars “strum” instead of just sounding like muddled low end reverb.
The biggest improvement came with the 3.5’s in the dash. Way more detail and clarity. The problem with the Infinity 3.5’s is that they only fit into the lefts and rights, because they have a crossover dongle, and there is no room in the center speaker location for the dongle. If I had to do it all over again I would probably have went with the db’s because they have the crossover built into the speaker.
After hearing the horror story of trying to mount 4” speakers, and hearing how amazing good 3.5’s sound, I doubt 4”s are worth the effort.
Do any of you have the steering wheel audio controls? I would like to put a aftermarket head unit in and upgrade speakers but dont want to loose my controls on the steering wheel.

rcmaxxx: check out PAC (Pacific Accessory Corporation) they will have the part you want.
myhikingboots: I would have to agree, 3.5's would probably be the best way to go, I really like the sound of my 4's, but can only compare to the factory. Although, I wanted to make sure they could handle the power if I sent it to them, and I did not want a tweeter smaller than 1",,(will put my other one in a little later today and post pics.)
