beggars can't be choosy. I really hope your problem is fixed and doesn't come back in a few months. There have been more than a few others that reported the problem fixed after replacing the components you did (chain, guide and tensioner), only to have it come back months later. The one key part that seems to do the final trick is the cam phaser.

Good luck with your truck, and if the noise does come back, please find another forum for advice, as this one obviously sucks.

There is clear evidence of wear on the guides beyond what should be there for a vehicle with 60k. The mechanic has also stated the new chain has far more tension on it than the old one had so there we go. Next time listen to the lone post on here, could have saved a lot of people their time and money. Worst forum fail ever.
I glad to hear the symptom has disappeared for you, but I would recommend giving the repair some time and miles. There have been a few people with the same symptom set that had the chain, guides, and spring tensioners replaced only to discover that the symptom returned, albeit somewhat slowly. There's two people in this thread that discovered the issue only went away by replacing the cam phaser. I personally know of one 2010 Ram that went through lifters, then valves, then camshaft, then timing chain, guides and springs, and the problem did not go away until the cam phaser was finally replaced and it's been 10 months.

But I do hope this solved it for you.
Best regards,
Dusty

I have been wondering as long as i've owned my 2011 what the f that noise was. After lots of research on the web and my warranty expiring in 2 days i finally found out here what it was.

Has anyone come to a solid solution as the fix? After reading it all it seems maybe a cam phaser fixes it but has anyone had enough miles on to verify this? The other solution that perhaps worked was that tech bulletin for the pcm flash. Can anyone verify that worked long term?

My truck has done this for 50k miles and has not gotten any worse. Its annoying but i deal with it. Rather then rush to the dealer before warranty is up and have some tech tear apart my motor and probably do a half *** job putting things back together i might be better off leaving it alone unless someone has a solid solution. I saw all the posts about replacing this and that and no improvement.

One thing i do know for the first year my truck got a lot better mileage, after that first year it tanked to 13.5 avg. I wonder if whatever changes and causes this mds noise issue has any relation to the mileage plummet as well.

There's at least one person in here that resolved the issue by replacing the Cam Phaser after many other parts had been replaced. I can tell you that I personally know of one other 2011 with the same symptom that was also resolved by replacing the Cam Phaser. That vehicle has since gone better than 20,000 miles without the problem reoccurring.

I'd strongly recommend you getting yours into the dealer for a warranty repair ASAP. A couple of years ago techs thought this was a timing chain and guide problem, probably because they were having issues with the timing chains on car motors. It's taken awhile, but from what I can tell the techs are now aware that the Cam Phaser is the more likely culprit on truck motors.

Dusty

Other then some creating some noise this issue hasn't created further problems for people correct? I saw one engine damaged but that was another culprit. What's the harm just leaving it be. Like I say it's been doing this for 50,000 miles at least it hasn't gotten any worse doesn't seem to cause any harm other than a little bit of noise

If for no other reason it could affect resale value. I found it just darn annoying. Frankly, I don't think a tapping motor is good advertising for Chrysler.

ya i said screw it. I don't trust anyones work. If it hasn't created a problem in 50,000 miles i don't imagine it will. Hope not at least. As for resale i'll just trade the thing in and save that hassle when i get my next truck. They offered me 20 for it today with 68k on the ticker. Even if i did sell it outright i don't imagine they'd even notice it. Its not that loud you have to pay attention to it to hear it. Other cars and people walking down the road when you pass by probably hear it good though lol. Def not good advertising.

I also have a 11 ram with the ticking hemi on mds/eco mode. Booked in for the dealer next Tues. Hopefully they can diagnose it but I'm very skeptical about it. Has anyone had major failure because of this ticking or could it lead to a major problem? I'll post link soon as it up loads. Sure its the exact noise as the link in this thread

Nah no major failures. IMHO is not worth letting some tech tear into the engine over. I don't trust anyone's work as i find 98% of the time they don't do a good job or as good as I could have. Mines been doing it for at least 50,000 miles.
