My dealer told me it is a two-part process: Come in to get the diff inspected to "see what parts, if any, need to be used". Then, they will either order parts or use parts on hand (they are ordering some of the commonly needed ones, apparently). They weren't very clear on this over the phone. I love wasting time by making multiple trips to deal with Chrysler's inability to properly stock the required parts.

Well, apparently they were more prepared than they initially indicated. My service was able to be done in one trip. The way the service writer described it, they inspect the pinion nut from the outside of the diff (no need to open it) and see whether it is 6 point or 12 point. In my case it was 6 point so they replaced it with a 12 point nut and a retainer.

well this is contrary to everything we have been told about pinions with crush sleeves. you cannot remove a pinion nut on a crush sleeve axle without putting in a new crush sleeve and re-torquing it. this entails a pretty involved dis-assembly of the axle itself. so if this is what chryco is doing to "fix" the problem they are merely kicking the failure down the road. total b.s. if you ask me...

OK, here is EXACTLY how the recall reads...

There is not to be ANY nut removed then a new nut installed in it's place. That is nowhere in the procedure.
If it's done this way, it is NOT the way the recall instructs that it be done.

The rear axle pinion nut must be inspected.

Rear axles found with a loose pinion nut and/or a seized up rear axle assembly must be reconditioned.

Rear axles with a 6-point pinion nut that has not loosened will have a pinion nut retainer installed.

All rear axles with a 12-point pinion nut require no additional repairs.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I misunderstood what the service writer said. So they apparently found that mine had a 6 point nut and added a retainer.

You're ok Rob, I was aiming at the wild speculation throughout this thread that Chrysler was telling dealers to take nuts off and put them back on....which is wrong. I think we do a disservice to members by letting grossly wrong information float around.

However, I do understand the customers' uncomfortable feeling of an automaker having to retrofit a basic mechanical design that has been used for decades.

Call him and make sure that's not what they did. If so, take it back. I know it's surprising but there are some techs who can't read....lol.

Confirmed: They inspected, found 6 point nut, re-torqued (or confirmed torque setting) and added nut retainer. They did not change to a 12 point nut.
