Default RE: Warranty / Exhaust

Has anyone tried replacing the stock muffler with straight pipes and just used the stock resonators to muffle the sound?

I already put my Flowmasters on but got to thinking that it would be a lot cheaper to just put in straight piping to replace the muffler and use the resonators to control the sound level.

Is it worth a try? Or would it be too loud?

Well I did it, I had Flowmasters put on my Magnum RT. I had intended to also remove the stock resonators as well, but the shop talked me out of it. They have done a few trucks with the Hemi and they said it turned out LOUD! My results were okay, a little louder than stock, but not as loud as I wanted them. I have had Flowmasters on my Impala and Crown Vic and they sounded great.
Hey, just above in this thread I posted a link to a video file showing you exactly what the car sounds like without the resonators:

It's not that loud at all. I would cut them off.

Yes, two 40 series - no resonators. Sounds great. I just drove it 1200 miles this weekend on the highway and the exhaust note was so subtle that my mom and I could chat the whole way. She loves the car, and she's not into hotrods. So that should say something about how tame the exhaust note really is during normal driving.

Tim, I downloaded your file to hear the sounds, I wish it lasted longer.

I will have to do something, car is too quiet as it is. Will wait a week or so to decide what to do, might remove the stock resonators to see how it sounds. If too loud, I may put on smaller resonators, ones that are straight through.

Wish the exhaust was tunable, with a switch on the dash....LOL

Ok! I just heard the best sounding system yet! I don't want it too loud, but I do want it to sound like it performs.

Check this link out: MagnaFlow

The Magnaflows do have a sweet sound. But you really can't go wrong with any of the reputable aftermarket muffler makers for this application. That's because, unlike an Accord with a muffler the size of the Lincoln Tunnel, the Hemi itself does the lion's share of the work in creating a nice exhaust note. Once it is uncorked, that is.

This brings up another question.....when it comes to the various muffler brands, does
any particular brand give off a deeper, meaner, big block type tone? Just curious.
I hope I can get my exhaust "enhanced" early next week.

A good question, but a tough one to answer for someone else. I think the Magnaflows sound great and I know that Borla posts sounds on their site so that is a good starting point for you to see what is most pleasing to your ears. It winds up being a very subjective thing as everyone hears things differently.

Let us know what you decide on.

Why is it that Magnaflow and I think the Borla systems leave the resonators in place, or replace them with their own? I see them tucked up under the rear bumper. Do we need those resonators there to keep the back pressure where it belongs? I hope I haven't killed my horse power by hacking them off.
