well...ummm..im new roun here... but mine is doing bout 20-22 mpgs cuz i work kinda far... i drive an 04ram cummins...stock...except i fitted an hks filter on the turbo... thats bout it.. i dont dogg it yet... yet.

 

After reading about so many not getting good mpg I am starting to wonder how people are breaking in the CTD. The CTD was made to haul and or tow heavy weight and driving them around town for its 20,000-mile break-in is not what they were made to do.

I feel one why to break them in if you do not have a Rv to pull is to put about 1000 Lbs or so in the bed and drive them non stop for as long as you can, the longer the better for break in. My wife and I drove ours for 28 hours straight except for fuel.

In my truck anyway I get my best mpg between 1500 and 1700 rpm’s or 55 to 60 MPH. One other thing keeping it below 2200 rpm’s also helps fuel mileage. So far the lowest mpg was 16.5 with less than 600 miles on it and my best was 20.38. All mpg are hand calculated. I now have 9200 on the clock.

you are right Charles, these engines are made for towing heavy loads, and that is the best way to break these engines in

Yesterday I loaded up with about 2000 pounds of mulch in the bed to put in the yard where I park my truck, gets muddy and rutted[:@]

raced a Z71 with the load, TST on 5/3, clutch slipping the entire time and still beat him

To be honest this is the first I have heard of breaking a diesel in under load. It's not the first or second diesel truck I have owned. I live on a working cattle ranch in the Texas hillcountry. My trucks have always had to work and more often than not that means pulling a trailer full of cattle. I can't say for sure when I first towed a trailer with my 2006 dodge but it was within the first week, and the second and so forth. I have come to the conclusion that the tires that work so well driving on a rough hillcountry ranch are the cause of my poor fuel economy. Once I wear them out, which won't take long, I'll get smaller tires.
Anyone have any suggestions on intakes, fuel additives etc. or any other cost effective ways to help with fuel economy.

cost effective? i'd suggest a drop in AFE filter and a rokktech sensor swap...this will add some timing to your injection. then when your ready for more power on top of that go to the edge ez set on 1... you might have to pull back the rokktech sensor a bit to make it run right

if your towing, you'll have to open up the exhaust some to keep the egt's down (this will hurt your mileage if yo go to a straight thru setup.

edit: oh yeah... 16 oz of power service diesel (PSD) and 8 oz of marvel mystery oil (MMO) per tank... gets me 1.0 mpg better, some report up to 3.0 mpg better

 

i have a 2001 it has a little done to it and its mpg is sucking bad what can i do to inprove it
