Engine replaced now trans won't downshift up hill
Awesome.man thanks so much. To be clear, the car should definitely downshift from OD right? I shouldn't HAVE to manually press the OD off button. Some people are telling me it's doesn't downshift from OD unless you have OD turned off but I swear mine used to downshift
If you slow enough, or step hard enough on the gas, yes, it SHOULD downshift.
Need to figger out why it isn't. I would be checking the TV cable first, make sure it is even hooked up, as it doesn't sound like it is......

I do the following to make sure
1. The converter locks up in 3rd gear as it should
2. I can tell it downshifts for passing or load
1. Disconnect battery for 10 seconds to reset any OD or TCC code
2. Start vehicle
3. Turn Overdrive off (dash light comes on)
4. Place vehicle in drive
5. You should be able to feel a very soft shift from 1-2, slightly firmer shift from 2-3, then a very obvious torque converter lock up
6. With torque converter locked, at 45mph stomp it.
7. Should downshift
8. Adjust TV cable until you get that downshift correct
Then back to normal operation
There is a very specific Dodge TV cable adjustment procedure in PDF floating around. It is an accurate procedure..use it.

Hey thanks for this. Is the 3rd gear downshift test just a point to check that the TV is adjusted appropriately? I haven't had any issues with it downshifting from 3 to 2. Only from 4 (od) to 3.

Yes just checking TV cable adjustment..use the procedure to get the adjustment right, then check it's function.
By the way, I would not assume the downshift will be linear, like I press the gas a little the trans goes 4th to 3rd, press a little harder and it shifts from 3rd to 2nd.
My experience has been that TC lockup happens in 3rd gear, then it shifts to 4th. What you might think of a gas pedal prod from 4th to 3rd may never happen that way. The trans may instead do nothing until it realizes it really needs to downshift and it's behind in doing so, but by that point it goes from fourth to second. Then as load subsides, back to 3rd and back to 4th.

Ok thanks very much for the info. It definitely bogs down on hills at highway speeds. No downshift just slows way down and struggles.
So if I do those things and it downshift with a pedal stomp at 45mph it should be relatively correctly adjusted
