Transmissions
2nd update:
Seems I resolved the problem myself. Truth be told, had the check engine light not come on and given me the code for the speed sensor I probably wouldn't have as it did indeed turn out to be a bad speed sensor and since replacing it, it shifts fine again.

I have a 1999 dakota 4x4 5.2 with a 46re trans, the trans has no clutch lockup in reverse. When I removed the trans pan I found what could possibly be pieces of a snap ring or washer maybe around 6in in diamenter, How diffcult is the fix?
Mastertech,,, I have an 04 545RFE hemi.. with 180,000 miles….. about 4 years ago I replaced my tranny with one I got for $150.00 ..I miss diagnosed it as bad and realized that after I put the new one in ..but I keep the original trans for when the new one went out. . well time has come to put the original one in which has only 60,ooo mines on it and worked great back in ..but now that its in… it slipped really bad and only driving it 3 miles the pan is full of clutch material..I replaced all 3 sensors on the outside and the filers are on correctly.. what would cause a good tranny to go bad.?. would being stored for over 4 years cause this and what can I do to save it if possible?
Thanks for you help…

Hey Good Morning all;
I posted this before but unless Master tech is a Master Ninja responding in PM only i have not seem him respond in a long time but i know he's kicking it around the forums though.
AN update to my previous discussion on this thread I had said i still had the floating shift (Shifting in/out of gear 2nd to 3rd) or double shift...
Well that's actually not true.. what i was referencing i had hit a big *** bump in the road while almost WOT righ at a shift and it had seemed to have double shifted but it never happened again..
So the fix was infact replacing the Transducer and solenoid. But I know a buddy that has a dodge used the SMP (Borg Warner) cheap one and it failed..
The one's i used was Mopar branded i got off Ebay for about $100 for the set; Idk if it was or wasnt actually mopar for the price but it works well.
--------------
As far as the guys about OD I mean yeah its going to be sluggish.. the gear ratio in OD is so pathetic a 4banger has more get up.. so your gonna be dropping down to 4(th) out of lockup and then maybee into 3rd depending on how much you mash the peddle. Up hills are even worse.
the best thing you can do is make sure your systems fluids are good your keeping up with maintenance; your axels are well lubricated (Levels are good) and in the case of the 318 make sure all the TSB stuff is taken care fo like the intake>>>
Past that its as good as it gets with out dropping a ton of money.

Not mastertech but yes, the clutch plates of a previously used tranny can/will go bad if placed back into service again after a long period of non-use. The fiber material will swell, separate and rot from non-use and lack of fresh fluid on them. To be safe I would personally rebuild it with new seals and fresh fiber plates. Why did you pull it out originally?
It seems you’re correct on that.. I didn’t know this .....I stored the tranny with no fluid in it and kept it wrapped in plastic but guess that doesn’t help.. Thanks for your reply.
i pulled the first time because i thought it was going out but it was the diff that was going bad not the transmission..plus I had and extra one I got for just $150.00 bucks. which lasted 120,000 miles..

Sorry, I haven't check out your section that much. But I guess I should. If the transmission has been wrapped for 4 years, most likely you will have condensation which in time is water. ATF and water doesn't mix well and will cause the transmission to fail. And water will take the clutch material off the disc. What cause the transmission you put in four years ago to fail?
on a 97 44re trans, which line is input to the radiator? Is it marked on the rad? Adding a cooler and need to know which line flows "from" the trans.
thanks much...

@master tech
First and foremost, Thanks for all the help you provide!
2001 Dakota 4wd, 4.7 Quad Cab.
I am having 2 problems.
1. When engaging 4wd, there is a terrible clanking sound coming, I assume from, the transfer case. The 4wd locks in and I have only traveled at extrememly low speeds. I first thought it might be cv axles but there is very, very little play in them. There does seem to be a large amount of play in the front driveshaft regardless of whether locked into 4wd or not. The front driveshaft turns maybe 10-15 degrees. My guess is loose chain or worse. Possibly related there is a constant "jingle" that is drivetrain realted.
I have fair to better shade tree mechanical skills but am unable to find alot of information. Would I be able to remove the rearward case cover while leaving the transfer case mounted to inspect the chain? It would really be tough to take it to the shop for $$ right now.
2. At speeds about 45-55, when the transmission might want to downshift 4 to 3, i get a rumble and loss of power. I want to run it with the overdrive off to see if it is possibly related to something with the 3-4 clutch plate (if that is accurate for this truck).
Problem 2 just started, the transfer case i discovered last year and seems non-incidental unless I have to lock in 4wd. With winter coming soon, thought I'd dig into it.
One last thing, If I went with a used one, assuming it is a Np233, what models would interchange, 01-04 Dakota and 01-03 Durango?
Thanks for the consideration!
Mark
