Brian,

There's no filter on the 5-speed. You just need to drain and refill with the right oil (I used Pennzoil Synchromesh). There is a large drain plug on the bottom of the trans. And then the fill plug is on the passenger side of the trans.

All you have to do is drain it and then refill it up to the bottom edge of the fill hole (or you can remove your shifter and fill it that way) while on a level surface. It will take about 4.8 pints if it's completely empty. Anyway, there's not much to it.

The problem you are having with the shifting, could be cause by either bent shift rods or synchro's.

The knocking sound maybe from either the input shaft bearing or bad throw out bearing.

rakaric You may have a damage bore that the accumlator and seal that allow the transmission to shift into 4th gear. I would have someone hook up a drb3 and perform a clutch test on the transmission.

I would find a shop that has a power flusher and watch them as they do the flush.

Replace the governor and transducer. The governor is hunting to upshift.

What about a truck that will randomly surge/ and also die. Its very hard to explain and also it happens at the most random times. During the dying part, I can throw it in neutral and gas it and nothing happens and i can also just throw it in any gear and gas it and nothing happens. When i do it with it in gear sometimes i'll hear a knocking noise as i give it gas,i'll then turn of the truck then it runs fine.

how hard of a fix is that since the tranny will have to come out for that of course?
