I posted this in another thread, but since you're an expert, figured it was worth reposting in this thread.

2002 3.9L Automatic

When run at higher RPMs, the truck will shift at high RPMs. I do not understand if this is a computer issue or another issue. For example, I'm accelerating to get on the highway and shift at 3200 RPMs. For the remainder of the drive, the truck will shift at 3000+ RPMs. So I could be driving in a 25 mph zone and the truck stays in 2nd gear at 30mph at (unsure of the number) 2300 rpms instead of 3rd gear at a lower rpm. If I want to go into 3rd, I need to speed up so I hit that 3000 mark, and then it will shift into 3rd. If I turn the truck off for a minute or so the issue resets and it shifts normal.

The transmission will shift from 1st to 2nd gear at 18 to 22 mph and 2nd to 3rd 22 to 30 mph. 3rd to 4th 30 to 40 mph. Then you will have lock up. You could have a bad governor solenoid or valve body, if the transmission is shifting correct. Does the check engine light come on?

The transmission may not upshift with the bad governor solenoid. Even in overdrive.

Okay. Still trying to find definitive answers regarding the possibility of rebuilding/"bullet-proofing" my 42RE for use behind a built, @350hp 5.9L. I have heard/been told that a stock 46RE still wont take that power for very long so if I am going to have to rebuild the 46, wouldn't it be better (cheaper) to just take the one I have (42RE) and bullet-proof it instead of buying a 46RE and bullet-proof that one? I'll stop asking if I can get a definitive answer. Sorry for going on and on about this. Oh, and thanks.

What would cause a 42RE to come out of gear and bounce off the rev limiter when the gas peddle is floored from a stop?

Default Please answer '78 dodge truck trans issue

I am SOOOO glad you are willing to answer trans questions!
I have a 1978 Dodge 300 Custom 1 ton dually 2 wheel drive truck. It has the 440 factory engine in it. It also has a 3 speed automatic trans.
Both the engine and the trans were rebuilt about 10k miles ago. This truck has been sitting for the last 5 years! Strange as it sounds, someone did all of that woirk to it and then never drove it. Anyway, I have replaced the 2 batteries (it runs off of 2 -- stock from the factory) the alternator, starter, rebuilt the carb (old gas I'm sure) replaced the fule pump and added a fule filter. I runs great, but now it won't shift into 3rd gear.
When this issue started it was only when it was cold. Once the truck warmed up it would shift. The trans fluid was at the right level (ckd when warmed up) but it wouldn't shift into 3rd! I was advised to add some fluid because maybe the dip stick wasn't the right one, or someone else thought the fluid was supose to be checked while it was in neutral (not park). So it is now about 3/4 qt over full ... but it still won't shift into 3rd. Any thoughts?

It's awesome that you are volunteering to answer questions. thanks in adavance. My 04 Dak 4x4 has the 46re and sometimes when i crank up the truck and put it in reverse and i can hit the gas a little and it wont move but after a second or two it will go. Sometimes it dont do it. It is only in reverse. Truck has 106k miles and fluid looks clean.

So I would say that according to your shift points you outlined that is about where my points are at.. and lock up always occur at 45mph

Its mainly when ever it shifts sometimes it wants to try to shift then not then shift again; but then again i was driving and it felt more like it shifted up then shifted up again.. its kinda hard to tell..

Dude... thank you for your expertise!

maybe mine is simple:
99 Durango, 5.9 4X4
280K miles
tranny filter change approx 50K miles ago. (smoothed out some shifting hesitation)
I want to do the filter again, but local dealers won't touch it now (one wants to do a full trans flush, which i'm pretty sure is a bad idea) one suggested Lucas or Chemtool... Really!?! not to sure about that!

AT ANY RATE:
Tranny has some very vague "slipping" "Searching"
thought i'd drop pan, change filter.
anything else i should do in there?

ALSO: considering a gradual changover to amsoil ATF...

thoughts?

Not even what type of tranny i have, but it runs great, and plan on another 200K from the engine...and hopefully tranny
