OK...I'll bite...what in the heck do your reverse/backup lights have to do with the starter? If you're hearing a click from the starter solenoid, that means your neutral switch is fine...e.g. not preventing the circuit from energizing as it would if the switch was defective, or the truck was in any gear except neutral or park (A/T). So, tell us...why have you said twice now... that you won't check the starter... "until I see if I have reverse lights..."?
The switch on the transmission if it goes will keep the starter from starting
Essentially the same thing that would happen if the little wire was broken out of the starter housing some how
So, I'm going to have to get a new starter anyway I guess. I pushed the wire back in the hole it came out of and the truck started but I don't like doing that
Also noticed my coolant overflow bottle was a little low. Lol
I think it will go great with my Vortech build. Went with 1800stall torque converter since I'm running stock cam currently and went ahead and got the #6V upgrade. Since I'm putting together a supercharger package I also clicked NO for the "under 500hp?" box lol.

All the various safety switches are in the control circuit for the starter relay. If you hear the relay click, that means the circuit is functioning properly. Replacing the starter is the hot ticket.
Today the truck got a new throttle valve cable and return spring. It turned out that the stretched spring was the culprit causing some shift weirdness by not returning the valve to the fully closed position. WTF PITA FML.
The new cable, from Crown Manufacturing (52104030AB), has too large a socket for the ball stud at the transmission end. Of course. I couldn't find the package of mylar sheet that's supposed to be in with my miscellaneous bits, so I cannibalized a mylar insulated ribbon cable out of a dead DVD drive that turned out to be almost exactly the same width as the depth of the socket. Two turns of that around the inner diameter of the socket and the thing clicks into place with just about the same force the correct socket requires.
Lately these ten minutes jobs are getting entirely too complicated.
