But isn't the newer coolers better designed or something? I know the cooler on my 76 is almost the size of the radiator....

So if I bought a new cooler, it would have to be run with two coolers? The factory and the aux?

Just get the diesel sized transmission cooler like dhvaughan has, it should be more than you'll ever need...

Run factory AND aux. Aux after factory.

For the ultimate in cooling, use a chambered cooler, not a tube type. The cheapest and easiest one to get is the auto trans aux cooler off of a 6.0L PSD, they are chambered and have 1/2" lines. Should be 2003.75-2007.25 model years.

This is where I mention the thermostatic bypass valve..... So the trans warms up quicker, and doesn't over-cool.

First things first...

If the trans doesn't slip and to you works normal, then you need to stop being such a giant vagina and quit worrying.

Add some Lucas Automatic Transmission treatment to help preserve clutch material & reinvigorate seals and maybe if you're feeling energetic install a bigger trans cooler, new filter & Schrader valve to check line pressure. Also +1 on the add a trans pan drain plug.

Craigslist is your friend, check it often, early bird gets the worm! I seen several transmissions going for $100 around me, for that price I wouldn't give a fk if it bought me only a year or two before needing to be replaced again.

damn, i've been trying to stay out of this, but have to answer.

+1 stop worrying about the damn thing and just drive it.

but - do not put Lucas or anything else in it other than atf+4. read montec's thread about the effects of Lucas.

Wow I did not know that about the Lucas!

I'm always a die hard put only ATF+4 in my mopars, so I guess that's another reason to stay that way!.

I used Lucas once in my Neon when I had a leaky trans cooler line & figured it was better than adding Dexron in...its all I had to use because the store was out of ATF+4 (typical!), so I threw it in. My only other experience with it was on my sisters Ford/International Shuttle Bus with a 7.3 Diesel with a C6 trans that was slipping, Lucas fixed the slipping on that, and that was 6 years ago and she's still going strong!.

In all my experience with cars, it really is better to beat the $hit out of something & expose its weakness than to limp around with it wondering whats going to blow out or wondering WHEN it is. I wouldn't pay over $2000 for any transmission unless it was for a diesel motor! or I was drag racing with a sponsor.
