But i dont know what in the gear train that would break to cause a no reverse but ok forward condition. Ive near seen or heard of it.
Unless the rear band is not applying, maybe a fallen out band strut or a broken reverse servo.
I would drop the pan and do an inspection of the rear band and the pan.
I have the same situation with my 2001 5.9L 46RE. It won't back uphill at all. On flat ground you have to push it to get it rolling then it will continue moving and pick up speed, but don't hit a bump or turn uphill until you have some speed. I have found that if I park facing uphill slightly, it will move (more than just due to gravity). I'm hoping the band just needs adjusting. I'll try to drop the pan this weekend.
Thanks for the responses. Luckily, I don't have to fix mine immediately. I'm working on my Porsche 914 currently. I hope to have that on the road in the next week, then move on to the truck. I don't have any experience with an auto transmission, but I know my way around the toolbox and shop manual pretty well to figure things out! tango-52 let me know how you're work goes. I really don't know what level of transmission knowlege is required to work on a band strut or reverse servo, or even troubleshoot.

Getting ready to aquire a 98 ram 1500 I believe it has the 5.2 v8 has had a new trans put in it in about 5 years ago. The truck was parked about 3 years ago due to the fact that it only has first gear and reverse. its an automatic. Any ideas of what it might be. I should be getting it later tonight or tomorrow and will see if it throws any codes.
I am putting a 5.9 out of a 2000 ram in front of a rebuilt 46re from a 98 ram. The original motor in the 98 was a 5.2 so my question is: will the torque converter that was used with the 5.2 work with the 5.9?
My 1998 Dodge 1500 was not shifting into 3rd, I replaced the govenor and solenoid, changed the fluid and filter. Now the truck will shift into 2nd and 3rd but does it at a higher rpm than normal. Is there anything I may have missed?
Howdy, I have a 2001 5.9L. I think this truck has a 46RE. I pulled into the driveway yesterday with no problems. The engine light was on a few days ago and it went off a few days ago. When I put the truck into reverse and pressed the gas, it didn't engage into reverse. There seems to be a faint spinning/rubbing sound while in reverse. When I shift back to neutral there's a "click" sound. It's driving forward and changing gears fine. I've read this thread from top to bottom and haven't seen comments about this from previous conversations. Any comments about what I should check are appreciated!
That sounds like that intermittant cold fluild reverse servo buzz that I had when I fiddled with my trans until I got it tweaked right. Let it warm up for a good bit and see if reverse works for you. If that is the sound I'm thinking of, it won't hurt a thing, but scares the daylights out of you.
Do you park on an incline?
To answer your question, yes the converters will "work". They will fit both transmissions and motors and make the truck move. As far as stall speeds and weights, i havent a clue.
MONTEC, does it look like my tranny was rebuilt? this is 24K after the rebuild....PO had it rebuilt, i saw recipt....just wanted to make sure the whole thing was rebuilt. and this is the first tranny flush since the rebuild...fluid looked good for 24K.....truck has 202K, this looks to clean to be original....just would like a second opinion

AND THE GREEN TWIST I TOLD YOU ABOUT....
