I have a 2000 cummins manual tranny and can just barely touch the spring when trying to check it for play. The ones u guys did on the trucks must have been gassers or older models? Has anyone done this without removing steering column on a cummins before. If so how did u reach in there to work. I ordered the kit and will be working on this soon. Thanks

Hey all, I have this same clunking that is described in this thread. I had no idea where it was coming from. I just replaced all my tie rods and upper and lower ball joints last week. I am still getting the clunking noise. But after doing some research and finding this thread I checked the spring on the steering column and it has no play what so ever. My steering is sloppy and I have quite a bit of play before the wheels turn. I would say about a 1/4 turn. I had my gf turn the wheel and it seems the loose steering is coming from the steering box. Can this be adjusted and where else could this clunking be coming from. It usually happens at slow speed while turning and on bumpy roads.

There is a procedure in the service manual for adjusting the steering box, it details a two step adjustment, with the box off the truck...... alternatively, there is an adjuster, and jam nut, right on top of the box, you can try loosening up the jam nut, tightening down the adjuster screw, re-tighten jam nut, and see if its any better. Just go in small steps on the adjuster (1/4 turn).

THANK YOU, guys from rock solid, you were amasing in handling an issue of shipping what actual was my sides fault.
I installed the part in my old work truck , 1997 dodge ram 1500 ,5.9l,automatic, 247000 mls and still running great, but i had enough of my steering problems! I almost bought a new steering coloum.
I stumbeld over your site and gave it a try.
Works great feels like almost new.
easy yo install straight forward!!Maybe a little too much paperwork , i know you have to cover your butt from these self knowing all wanna be mechanics . they would might not get it.lol
Anyway, installed in 15 min. with steering coloum installed .
