Oil Pressure at idle
hey guys long time no see. soooo i still have a oil pressure problem. here is the problem, when cold pressure it up at about like 45-50 but when warm it drops down to bout 30-35 and its fine when drivin it holds right there, but when i come to a complete stop and it drops to idle the dash gauge will drop to 0 and the bells start ringing. tap the gas even just a little bit and it jumps right back to 35. i thought maybe it was the synthetic i put in, so i put conventional back in and same thing. only thing i have done before that was i did the intake plenum fix. anything wilkl help me out guys. thanks.

Verify what pressure is doing with a mechanical gauge. You can get a cheapy for like 20 bucks at any autoparts store.
If the mech gauge tells you the same thing, you can maybe save the engine by simply putting in a high volume oil pump. Less than 50 bucks for the pump, and about 25 for the gasket...... (plus an oil change......) Takes about 2-3 hours to swap it out.
If the mech gauge tells you your dash gauge is lying, replace the sending unit.
If the mech gauge tells you the same thing, you can maybe save the engine by simply putting in a high volume oil pump. Less than 50 bucks for the pump, and about 25 for the gasket...... (plus an oil change......) Takes about 2-3 hours to swap it out.

One thing I ran into the previous owners did very little maintenance and the lifter valley and heads were plugged with sludge. Removed the pan and installed a melling pickup in addition to stock oil pump. The melling pickup has a larger area for oil to enter. My pressure now is 60-65 cold an 35 - 40 at idle.

ook so earlier i went and got some lucas oil stabil, and its not dinging at me. it did once, then i tapped the gas and got it to go back up and it hasnt done it again. so wtf? and then my gas gauge started fluctuating it dropped all the way to empty and then slowly came back u but didnt go up to where the correct fuel level would of been. and just 10 mins ago i took it to dinner, and it all worked fine, so wtf? whats normal oil pressure when warm? mine is sittin at like 30-35. but not dinging at me.

My oil psi (in a 95 360 with 207K original oil pump/pick up tube ) is 55-60 at cold start idle....and drops to about 45-50 PSI after warmed...and while on the gas, ive seen the needle all the way almost to the last line in the "operating range" so around 80 PSI?....only does that when im on the gas going consistant speed.....other then that when im on the gas its around 50 PSI warm
And I used synthetic when i bought it at 187K......started using conventional 2 oil changes ago (i change my oil every 2500 miles or 3 months)....and with conventional i noticed that my oil PSI is alot more stable...with synthetic, the guage would vary almost every day...never bottomed to 0 tho....and i noticed with conventional, that under my valve covers is a bit cleaner, then before (when i did plenum i did valve cover gaskets as well thats how i know, and i pull valve covers every so ofter to check for sludge build ups, and at 207K, not one bit of sludge that i can see.)

At one point, auto manufacturers could make an oil pressure sending unit that would last longer than the motor it was screwed in to. Along about the 90's, all that changed, and something as simple as an oil change could kill the sensor. It's an electronic part, with some really interesting failure modes...... That, and the gauge doesn't get its cues directly from the sensor either, the PCM monitors the sensor, and then clues in the gauge.
Mine would have the low pressure light on, but, the needle would still read 40+ PSI...... reconcile that one if you can.

well i took the cluster out th dash and cleaned the connectors on there, and put it all back and went and drove it and it all worked like a champ, so tomorrow we will see what it does on the way to work. and if its still broke, ill see about gettin a sending unit after work for a weekend project.
