Default 96 Ram 1500 BIG Problems!

I Hope this is the right place, I'm new here.
My name is dakota, I Got a 1996 Dodge ram 1500 laramie ext. Cab.

Well, it was dumped off on me by my father, It's got some problems.
Firstly, It has normal oil pressure, untill the engine warms up. Then it drops to zero. and after a few minutes, it begines to tick. So i shut it off, wait a few minutes, fire it up and it goes to normal. then drops again in minutes. Same routine from there.
I've been told it's the oil pump, Pickup tube, Sencer, The list goes on.

Secondly, It shakes at around 55-60 miles per hour. Cant figure out why.
once i accelerate at high RPMs, it stops, but when i try to keep it a normal speed, it shakes. RPM drops to around 750-1500 when it shakes.

I Have 15 inch tires in the front on some jeep rims, I Have the original rims, but they have flats on them. ( Had a bad ex girlfriend haha)
the aligment seems fine, what else could it be?

It's recently had spark plugs, Fuel filter replaced. And not sure if it could be my wiring, i recently Installed a sirene, A Lightbar, CB, and such. (Voulenteer firefighter)

So i need some input, What is causing all this? i need it to be solid running. I Just have no idea where to start.

Any feedback is apriciate.

-Dakota

Oil Pressure: Need to drop the pan, and see what's in there. (oil level IS correct, right?) Pickup tube may be getting clogged, or, there may be something floating around in there, that gets sucked into the pickup after a bit. Only way to know, is drop the pan and look. It sure wouldn't hurt to replace the pump while you are there. (if you are over 100K miles on the truck, put in a high volume pump.)

Is the CEL on? (does it work??) Take a look at the Plenum thread stickied at the top of this forum. Common problem on these trucks, and it sounds like you are a victim.

As far as the shake, try turning off the overdrive when it starts to shake...if it goes away for the most part you have a misfire problem...I have the same issue...it doesnt always throw a code or check engine light...I have a crank position sensor on order and am hoping the shop just whacked it while replacing my transmission when all this started..

From the factory service manual:
CONVERTER CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT
Converter clutch engagement in third or fourth
gear range is controlled by sensor inputs to the powertrain
control module. Inputs that determine clutch
engagement are: coolant temperature, engine rpm,
vehicle speed, throttle position, and manifold vacuum.
The torque converter clutch is engaged by the
clutch solenoid on the valve body. The clutch can be
engaged in third and fourth gear ranges depending
on overdrive control switch position. I f the overdrive
control switch is in the normal ON position, the
clutch will engage after the shift to fourth gear, and
above approximately 72 km/h (45 mph). I f the control
switch is in the OFF position, the clutch will engage
after the shift to third gear, at approximately 56
km/h (35 mph) at light throttle.

When you turn OD off at what speed does it start to shake at in third gear?
Download the factory service manual that's in the FAQ's section.

Check for bad u-joints or worn output bushing in trans.
Get rear up on jackstands chock front wheels put in neutral.
Get under there and shake driveshaft at trans and rear pinion to see if everything is tight, no slop.
Good luck.

It probably needs a new oil sending unit, oil pump, or pickup screen , and plenum replace and new o2's along with replacing the clogged cat. And how did you replace the fuel filter?

On a side note, welcome to DF. Now add all the info about the truck to your sig and profile. Please.
