5.9 Rebuild on the cheap: Now Just Empty Every Pocket build.
Well the debate on to paint or not to paint the intake has been fun. I'm not going to decide until I get to the point of putting the intake on. Then I'll look at it and decide if I like how it looks or if I want to paint it. Going to paint the timing cover today and then start putting parts back on. Of course I'll take pictures as I go along.
Well I ended up cleaning all my lifters today which was a good thing. I ended up finding out that I had one bad lifter out of the bunch too. They were also very dirty and had a bunch of the contaminated oil with water.
For those of you who have never taken a lifter apart I took some pictures for you and also the lifter that broke.
So here is the lifter taken apart with all the parts.

On the left is the lifter body, then on the right from top to bottom: Plunger, Spring, Cap & Clip.
This picture shows the order that the parts go in.

Next is the good plunger and the broken plunger parts that are inside the it.

Then here is a picture of how the plunger goes together but it is not suppose to be taken apart.

Now this is the bowl I was cleaning the lifters in and I had dumped it out twice before this because of how bad it had gotten.

So I guess I'll be looking for a new lifter now.
Can I just replace this one bad lifter or do I have to replace all of them?

You can just replace the one. But, given that you can get a set from Mopar Performance for around 110 bucks..... I would consider that cheap insurance. All the lifter live in the same environment......... any idea what cause the one to break?
Alright folks I have looked around and Hughes engines & HiPotek both have the standard magnum lifters for $136. Anyone got a web site that has them for any cheaper? I'll pull the trigger on them tonight or tomorrow so hopefully I'll have them next week sometime. So I am on hold again waiting for parts.
Rick, Sealed Power or Clevite ones should only be like $8-10 each locally also. Might also call the dealer, Mopar surprises me a lot on how fair the prices are on these things. Never know.
BTW, the lifters are the only part on my 5.9 I didn't replace when I built it, and sure as shlt, I have lifter clatter when it's cold. Definitely replace them.

Redneck,
Nope you got the whole top end kit from Mopar from your post. Could not find ANYONE selling them for that cheap.
Well ordered new lifters for the engine tonight. Paid $7.95 per lifter x 16 = $127.20 with free shipping. Best price I could find was with Odessa Cylinder Heads on Ebay.
Will be here sometime next week so once they get here I can continue working on the engine. Until they get here I'll get everything else ready. I can install the oil pump and pan, timing chain & cover. Hope everyone has a good weekend I'm going to a local motorcycle show & poker run.
