5.9 Rebuild on the cheap: Now Just Empty Every Pocket build.
All that carbon buildup was probably from burning oil that the blown plenum sucked in.... Stuck rings also don't seal well, and contribute to oil consumption. (not to mention low compression numbers....)
Because I want to get my Jeep running so I am doing it as cheaply as I can now. Then when I have the funds I will pull the engine, get all the machine work done. Then install the stroker kit and put it back together again. I have been without my Jeep for 2 years now and I want it running.

Yes I totally agree with that. I don't know how many miles were on this engine when it was pulled but so far I really haven't found much wear just a ton of carbon from burnt oil. I am guessing the mechanic that pulled it didn't know anything about the blown plenum gaskets or that once they blew about the oil consumption.

Some carbon is quite normal on any engine. These may have more due to plenum, but as I have not torn mine down, I can't speak from experience. After building this one and dropping it in, I would pick up another engine and set it on a stand to start on building that 408...than way you aren't down until ready to swap.
Well the block is at the machine shop. They are going to magnaflux the block, hot tank it, replace the cam bearings, soft plugs & dist bushing. They are also going to hone the cylinders & check them for out of round.
So my question for now is? Do I just clean the lifters of get new ones? I don't plan on replacing the cam at this point. I will also replace the timing chain. Anything else I should be thinking of?

If the lifters weren't giving you any troubles previously, just clean them up a bit, and then leave them soaking in oil until you are ready for them. (don't try and pump them up though.)
If they were giving you trouble, just replace them, I think you can get a set from mopar for around 100 bucks....

I have never heard this engine run so I can't say if they are good or bad. Don't I have to keep them each seperate so they go back with the position they came out of? It is almost tempting to just get new ones. Wish I could afford a TORQUER cam right now. I would but it and lifters and install them but then I am getting into having to get custom length push rods too right?
And I have questions about how to do my valves with the H&S non-adjustable rockers.
