Hearing what you went through with the engine running sounds more like a head/head gasket issue. Sounds like the top half of the motor will need to come apart to check things, not necessarily the short block.
That is pretty much my thoughts also. Of course fingers crossed that it's just a head gasket & not a head. If it is a cracked head then I've got to decide what I want to do as for new ones.
Looking there doesn't seem to be many options anymore for quality heads other than Edelbrock. The "NEW" EQ heads aren't supposed to be as good as the older ones like I have? Or that is what I've read at least.
Don't know if these are even available anymore or if they allow the use of magnum intakes.
I've got a set of Edelbrock heads that I picked up several years ago still sitting in their boxes along with an M1 2 barrel intake. Not sure if I'm going to use them on my existing motor or build another motor later and use them on it. Any reason why you don't want to go the Edelbrock route?

No I've just always had a hard time swallowing the cost of them. But if these EQ heads are bad for some reason then yes I'll be looking at them again. Back when I bought these EQ heads they were around $1K for a assembled pair compared to the Edelbrock pair for about $2,200 assembled. And I bought them about 8 -10 years ago.
Understand. I bought the Edelbrock heads from a guy selling them on Craigslist that was going to transition to a Hemi drivetrain, so he wanted to unload them pretty cheap several years ago. The M1 2 barrel intake is used as well.

I never seem to get that lucky.
The thought of going to a Hemi crossed my mind yesterday. If the heads or block is damaged I might even think about it more. But then I'd have a TON of parts to try and unload.
From what I am finding, the EQ's still seem to be a good, not quite so expensive... option.
I'd read some comments that I don't remember where that when they'd moved the foundry from Australia to ?? where they are being cast now that the quality had gone down. I'll say that I really think it's the head gasket since there are 3 cylinders getting coolant into them.
I ordered Cometic head gaskets but if there are better options I'm open for suggestions. I currently have Fel Pro gaskets on there.
There might be better pricing options but at Hughes Edelbrock heads are $1157 per head. Hughes Engines
