Default AC Oil

How much oil does the AC system take and where do you put it in at? I just replaced all the lines on my 2001 Ram 2500 and I have a buddy who will pull a vacuum and charge it for free I just have to add oil.

From what I have seen, folks put a bit in the compressor, some in the accumulator, and even some in the condenser....... Don't wanna put it all in the compressor, as you don't want to hydro-lock it, and destroy it.

When I install the new (used) condenser I will add some oil to it. This is just a trial run. If the compressor blows it blows and I'll have the system evacuated, vacuum pulled, and recharged with the right amount of oil and freon. To do all that a garage wants $350 and that's the cheapest I found.

I don't like to reuse old receiver/dryers from a junk yard. I'll reuse one when I open then pump down a system right away. The dryer can only hold about a tablespoon of moisture. I put most of the PAG oil in the compressor, a little in the condenser and dribble a little into the lines.

If you're like me (and I know I am) I'd want to get it working and not worry about it. When I fixed my Escalade a couple of years ago, I went ahead and replaced the compressor too. That way you don't have an old one fail and dump a bunch of metal junk in the system you have to clean out. I'd even go so far as to replace the serpentine belt if it's got much age on it.
