It could, but it doesn't. The coil driver and the tach driver are two different pieces on my JTEC PCM. Believe me - I've studied electronic engine and transmission control very extensively, particularly on 8th/9th gen fords and 2nd gen dodge rams.

DD, I bet your gauges wouldn't work either LOL!

But at least for once there's a technical argument going on....
What? Deep end? Impossible...

Okay, to settle this debate, in the 1996 FSM, go to 8W-30-17. Notice tach signal comes from the PCM. Tach is run by the PCM.

Go to 8W-30-14. Find the speedometer signal wire. That is not intercepted by the pcm, however the speedo requires 3 other wires beside that one, and no where in the FSM does it tell what they are.

you still didn't prove much unless you can find a diagram of the circuit board in the pcm and prove the tach don't share with the coil.

now since you couldn't find what the speedo wires do i definitely won't believe what you say since i know what they are for.

Whadya think? Thats from the FSM. Now it looks like to me, that the Voltmeter, the coolant temp, the oil pressure, and fuel level gauges run independently of the PCM. That's page 8E-3 in the 1996 FSM.

I think you are right about the ruffling lol... I've preened my feathers now . I posted the FSM clip right after DD posted his post cuz I didn't see it lol...
